8 June 2014: What Mangaka-something has to do with Mushishi 2: Electric Boogaloo

Yuuki and Sena
Co-starring Kugimiya Rie. Natch.

Just because I stop watching a show doesn't mean I've dropped it. This is the case with nearly every show in my Also Watching category, some of which have had zero progress in over two years. With regard to this season's new shows, I am way behind on Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to and Mushishi Zoku Shou, albeit for different reasons.

Yuuki and Sena
Nice kotatsu.

In the case of Mangaka-san, it's because it simply isn't very good. I want it to be good, because dumb harem comedies are basically anime junk food to me, but this show just isn't funny. I'm amused by some of the set-ups, but the executions inevitably stumble. Most of the jokes are obvious, but Seitokai Yakuindomo proved you can build an enjoyable comedy around the same three-and-a-half jokes providing the characters are likeable enough. That's not really the case with Mangaka-san, and I should probably just straight-up drop it. It trails the rankings for all shows I'm watching this season.

Ginko
Not enough anime characters smoke.

In contrast, Mushishi Zoku Shou is pretty good. In fact, I could describe it as excellent and expect zero disagreement from even the most critical anime fans. I'm not quite prepared to actually call it excellent, though. It's not quite as good as the first season because it doesn't seem as surreal or immersive, but that may just be a side effect of becoming more familiar with its mysticism and, well, plain ol' weirdness. It's really well done, and is a worthy successor to the first season, but you really have to be in the mood for its quiet seriousness. That's why I'm so far behind in the series. Because I have to be in the right mood to fully enjoy it, I often put off watching it so I don't "waste" the experience, with the end result that I don't watch it at all—at least not yet.

Sigyn and Cleo
It was absolutely critical to the plot of this serious mecha war drama for the
blond queen and the 12-year-old mecha pilot to get naked together.

Break Blade (fine, Broken Blade, if it bothers you that much) is also lagging, mostly because I've also seen it already. So far, it doesn't appear as if they've added very many new scenes. In fact, the most notable additions appear to be the OP and ED. I don't remember them from before, and I certainly don't remember them being so irritating.

Sigyn
Of course she's naked in the OP. Why wouldn't she be?

It's also because I find the movies cum show so exasperating. It has aspirations of being a capital-G Good mecha show, but everything related to the war is laughably bad. In fact, anything besides the one-on-one fights are really quite poor from a military standpoint. And this doesn't even take into account all the ridiculous parts involving the busty 12-year-old Cleo, the virgin blond-bombshell pacifist queen who won't stop pointing her unloaded gun at people, and the hapless rule of King "Hoser." Really, the problem with Break Blade is that it is too campy to be serious, and too serious to be campy. Pick a side, yo.

P.S. Spoilers.
