18 June 2018: Previewing new shows for Summer 2018

Yuki
Maybe she has PE first period?

After two strong anime seasons, I'm mostly ambivalent about the upcoming Summer 2018 season. The shows I'm most interested in (Overlord III, Major 2nd, and Hugtto! Precure) are all either sequels or continuations of existing shows. Thanks to the sheer volume of anime that comes out each season now, I'm sure I'll find plenty of acceptably amusing titles to watch, but I'm otherwise merely mildly optimistic about the synopses I've read and the PVs I've watched.

Nagisa
Maybe sometimes there will be choir.

The new show I'm looking forward to the most is Hanebado! because it looks to be a sports anime with crazy badminton action. I'm skeptical it can churn out that level of action consistently, but I think I'm still on board even if it's only crazy Sometimes Badminton action.

Pole dancing
Maybe she's taking a shortcut.

Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro looks to be a high-wacky comedy ostensibly about the challenges girls encounter on their way to school. Hopefully it's actually funny. It's based on a manga, so I could just see for myself, but I tend to prefer watching an anime before reading its original manga to reading the source material before watching an adaptation.

Floating thingy
I don't know what this is, but it seems to have air supremacy.

I haven't read Hoshi no Samidare (Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer), but I know it's well regarded. Fans of the manga seem pretty stoked that the author is making an original anime, so I guess I should be interested in Planet With on general principle. The Crunchyroll's manga jobbie has Biscuit Hammer, so maybe I'll at least read that.

Rachel and Zack
I guess this means it's not going to be wall-to-wall horror.

Of the shows characterized (somewhat dubiously) as horror I'll give Satsuriku no Tenshi a chance as long it doesn't turn out to be shounen jive. On the other hand, Happy Sugar Life sort of sounds as if it will try to milk a single joke for an entire season. I'm hoping that won't be the case, but I'm not very optimistic since the PV disappointingly makes it seem as if the bit in the synopsis about the lead girl being easy is untrue.
