Mahou Sensei Negima 1600x1200 wallpaper
Magister Negi 1600x1200.

Made a simple 1600x1200 wallpaper from the cover of the first Mahou Sensei Negima (AKA Magister Negi Magi) book. This is a fairly new manga by Ken Akamatsu, of Love Hina fame. It's basically Harry Potter and the Harem of Teenage Girls in manga form.

January 10, 2005:

The much anticipated Mahou Sensei Negima anime aired recently. I have a feeling its fans are going to be disappointed.

Negima is a popular manga by Ken Akamatsu of Love Hina fame. It stars a 10-year-old Welsh prodigy who becomes a teacher at a gigantic all-girl school in Japan. It's a harem comedy with like 30,000 potential love interests. Oh, and Negi has magic powers, so he's kinda like a young Harry Potter, but he has to keep these powers a secret. Wackiness then ensues.

Well, at least it does in theory. Mostly girls' clothes just fly apart whenever he sneezes and stuff like that. I've never been too impressed with the Negima manga. Aside from carrying the Akamatsu stamp and having nice-looking art, it doesn't interest me at all.

I found the first episode of the Negima anime completely listless. Actually, I found it boring and stupid, but that kind of criticism is probably too harsh after just one episode. However, I have no interest in watching any further episodes unless I start hearing about how fantastic it has become.

On a different note, I would like to defend Ken Akamatsu's previous anime work, the oft-maligned Earth Defender Mao-chan, which is a fairly amusing kids' show with a driving Yui Horie-sung opening song. Earth Defender Mao-chan features a squad of little girls who defend the planet from invading aliens. Since the invanding aliens are very cute and harmless in appearance, the Earth defense force has to fight them off with little girls, lest the aliens become telegenic martyrs. Oh, and there's a Love Hina crossover as well. Contrary to what you may have heard, Earth Defender Mao-chan is kinda awesome sometimes.

It's time for another installment of Viewer Mail:

[Note: Except for removing his first name and part of his e-mail address for his privacy, I did not edit Mr. Phung's rebuttal to my very brief Mahou Sensei Negima review in any way. It is reproduced above in its entirety, with his ellipses and asterisks intact.]

This is not one of those websites that belittles its readers' responses, so there will be no jokes or mockery on my part. I am merely offering Mr. Phung's counterpoint to give the reader a second opinion about Negima.

I should also point out that Mahou Sensei Negima is one of the shows I pulled from the menu bar on the left months ago (because I found Negima less entertaining than re-faxing tax forms to myself in an effort to see how many passes I could accomplish before the text became entirely illegible).

[Update: I put Negima back in the menu bar because for some crazy reason it is one of the most popular pages on this website.]
