18 July 2015: Summer 2015 shows I dropped already
I'm watching a lot of shows this season. I'm not watching literally everything, but I am following substantially more titles than I typically do. I fully expect to abandon a large number of these series during the summer 2015 cour, but I've only dropped three shows so far.
I stopped watching Aoharu x Kikanjuu after two episodes. It's not bad, but I don't like any of the characters, and the "survival game" aspect wasn't at all interesting, especially because Sabagebu! set such a high bar. In fact, I also place it after C3-bu and Upotte!! in terms of people-shooting-each-other-harmlessly entertainment. Unfortunately, Aoharu x Kikanjuu also fails as as a reverse-harem anime. At best, it seemed like Ouran Host Club without the charisma.
Akagami no Shirayuki-hime seems okay, but I get the feeling I'd be better off reading the manga. In any case, it's not really a show that appeals to me, even though I have nothing against shoujo titles where good earnest girls are threatened by bishies only to be rescued at the last minute by other bishies. It doesn't actually bear much of a resemblance to Akatsuki no Yona except that both are fantasy series with red-haired lead characters, but I'd much rather have more Akatsuki no Yona than Akagami no Shirayuki-hime.
I basically knew Kangoku Gakuen Prison School wasn't going to be my sort of thing because I previously dropped the manga despite its popularity. Prison School is another show that isn't exactly bad, but requires the viewer to have a certain appetite for its humor and style in order to fully appreciate all that it does. It's certainly worth checking out to see if it speaks to you, but it's not the sort of show everyone is going to enjoy. At a minimum, the fact that Mizushima Tsutomu (GIRLS und PANZER, Witch Craft Works, and Shirobako, among many other excellent shows) is directing Prison School makes it worth a try.
All three of the above shows I dropped are much better than some real crap I'm still watching, but the lousy shows survive by being interesting and thankfully short. I can't guarantee that will last, though.
