25 September 2016: Looking forward to autumn 2016 anime
There are a surprising number of shows I'm interested in scheduled for autumn 2016. Most of these are sequels of some sort, but there are a few new properties that have caught my eye. Notably, I've yet to do any concerted investigating into the upcoming season, so the following only include titles that I noticed at some point and deemed worthy of preemptively annotating in my anime spreadsheet.
The first of these is Brave Witches, a Strike Witches spinoff featuring members of the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing. This one is a no-brainer because I'm totally on board with the Strike Witches franchise, even though they never wear any pants. I don't really know anything about the 502nd except that Hara Yumi is in this and that the lead girl will surely be better than Miyafuji. I mean, she'd have to be, right?
Bubuki Buranki: Hoshi no Kyojin (BBK/BRNK: Giants of the Stars) is not so much a sequel as the second half of a split-cours, since the first season finished pretty much right when things were getting interesting. I had a low opinion of Bubuki Buranki while I was watching it originally, but I enjoyed it much more the second time through. And let me get this out of the way: Reoko did nothing wrong. I am Team Reoko all the way and will not question her methods. To Hell with Azuma, and fuck his insufferable mom. I don't remember what happened to his dad (off-screen death during the time-skip?), but Azuma's kid sister is in the show again. And from the looks of it, she found Easy's old battle costume at a thrift store. I guess I'm okay with that providing she doesn't take after her mother or her brother.
I don't know crap about Fune no Amu (The Great Passage) except that it's about working adults. That alone makes it worthy of at least investigating. Oh, and it's also a noitaminA show.
Hibike! Euphonium 2 (Sound! Euphonium 2) will hopefully be at least as good as the first season. Even I liked that one, even though I've had a low success rate with Kyoto Animation shows post-Haruhi. Of course, this also means the Twitter is going to be wall-to-wall lesbian 'shipping again.
I'm pretty sure ViVid Strike! is still technically a Nahoha sequel even though it's lost the Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha branding and there's no sign of Nanoha herself in the promotional materials. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid literally ran out of episodes in the middle of a tournament arc without even pretending to have an ending, so I don't know what to expect from ViVid Strike! Will it finish out the tournament? Will it just pretend none of that ever happened and just be about some new story? Will I get to see Corona carve up deadbeats with her little cake knife? Only one way to find out.
As far as I can tell, Shūmatsu no Izetta (Izetta of the End) is basically also Strike Witches. That's good enough for me. I'm totally willing to give this show a shot for the similarities alone, even if it turns out the girls might wear pants.
All right, Keijo!!!!!!!! seems sort of ridiculous, and not just because of the eight exclamation points in its title, but I have to at least see. The lead girl—at least in the promo poster—sort of looks like Houki from IS: Infinite Stratos except hopefully not shit. I am impressed the promo art did not give her swimsuit the impossible_clothes treatment, although I see that does not extend to all the characters.
3-Gatsu no Lion (March Comes in Like a Lion) is supposed to be legitimately good, so I guess I have to give it a try even though I'm not really in the mood for anything legitimately good right about now. Apparently it's also by SHAFT, so I'm dropping it quickly if it turns out to be SHAFTy for being SHAFTy's sake.
Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku (Magical Girl Raising Project) looks to be another show trying to subvert mahou shoujo tropes with its "death game" angle, but I'm willing to at see how it goes.
Eh, I'll give ClassicaLoid a try. Noto Mamiko is in this.
That's it for full-length shows so far, not counting Detective Conan, Mahou Tsukai Precure!, and Aikatsu! Stars. I'm already way behind on all of these shows, but I'll catch up again eventually, at least in theory.
Among the anime shorts airing autumn 2016, the one I'm looking forward to the most is the Anitore! EX sequel, Anitore! XX, even though it is sort of lewd. I'm hoping the sequel will involve breaking people off. This also basically means Yohane won't get to be 2016's chuuni of the year. Sorry, toots.
I'll give To Be HERO a try because it stars an adult character. He's even fat.
Nyanbo! seems like one of those things that can't go wrong, but then again, I lost interest in Bananya super fast.
I am going to watch Koneko no Chi Ponponra Daibouken because it is a sequel to Chi's Sweet Home, and that was some good shit right there. I'm not so sure about the new 3DCG animation, though.
Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desukara. was not exactly good, but it had enough amusing moments for me to watch Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desukara. 2.
Finally, I shall watch Nazotokine to find out whether it is a fan service vehicle or a kid's show, because I really can't tell. Surprisingly, it also features an adult lead character.
There are also a bunch of OVAs and specials which I'm interested in watching, providing they actually get released and subtitled. Neither of those seem to be guaranteed much anymore. In any case, that is already entirely too many shows, so hopefully autumn 2016 won't also feature a bunch of dark horses that I'll end up watching too.
